Road and Sidewalk Maintenance
The City of St. Thomas maintains 229 kilometres of roads. We aim to provide safe, convenient passage for all road users while protecting the environment and the life of our infrastructure.
What we maintain
Road surfaces: we inspect and patrol roads, repair asphalt, maintain shoulders, patch pavement, clean streets, remove litter from road surfaces, and seal cracks
Roadsides: we inspect sidewalks and maintain sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and roadside litter
Safety devices: we maintain pavement markings, street and traffic control signs, guideposts and guiderails
Winter maintenance: we patrol roads, plow and remove snow, clear sidewalks and bus stops, sand and salt streets and sidewalks, maintain municipal parking lots, and manage snow fencing and spring cleanup. See our Snow Removal page for more information
Other services: we maintain our vehicle fleet, maintain municipal parking lots, and manage traffic control for special events
Street sweeping
Our street sweeper runs from early spring through the season, weather permitting. We sweep residential and secondary routes at least twice a year.
Talbot Street and surrounding blocks are swept every Monday and Friday during the season. We then sweep higher-volume streets, followed by heavily treed areas like the courthouse district. Sweeping moves from west to east until the entire city is complete.
The sweeper operates from 4 a.m. to noon to avoid traffic and safely navigate islands and roundabouts.
