Active Transportation

The City of St. Thomas continues to build and improve our active transportation network so residents have safe, convenient ways to walk and cycle around the community. We encourage residents to take advantage of our network as part of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Transportation Master Plan

The City of St. Thomas updated its Transportation Master Plan (TMP) in 2025.

The TMP is a long-term strategic plan that guides how the City’s transportation system will grow, change and support future development. It considers how roads, cycling, walking, transit and other modes of transportation can work together to meet the needs of a growing community.

The TMP works alongside the City’s Official Plan, Strategic Plan and other master plans to support coordinated planning and investment across St. Thomas.

Walking in St. Thomas

Walking is one of the easiest ways to get active and get around the city. Use our sidewalks, trails and courtesy crossings to move safely on foot.

Courtesy crossings: these mark uncontrolled crossing locations in low-speed areas, using oversized yellow warning signs, depressed curbs with ramps, and ladder-style pavement markings. Vehicles are not legally required to stop at a courtesy crossing, so caution signs remind pedestrians of this. St. Thomas has 14 courtesy crossing locations. Contact Customer Service at 519-631-1680, press 0, for a full list.

See our Traffic and Road Safety page for pedestrian and driver responsibilities at crossings and crosswalks.

Cycling in St. Thomas

Cyclists are vehicles under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act and must follow the same rules as motor vehicles.

Bike lanes: St. Thomas is expanding bike lanes and cycling routes across the city to make cycling safer and more convenient. Bike lanes give cyclists a dedicated space on the road, separate from vehicle traffic. Check our current cycling map for bike lane locations, since our network continues to grow.

Bike parking: look for bike racks at city facilities, parks and along commercial streets throughout St. Thomas. We encourage you to always lock your bike, even for a quick stop. For extra security, we also offer bike lockers at several downtown locations.

If you're driving near cyclists:

  • obey all traffic laws, signs and signals
  • respect cyclists as vehicles under the Highway Traffic Act
  • slow down and give at least 1 metre of space when passing a bike
  • check for cyclists before opening your car door
  • look for cyclists and pedestrians before turning
  • stay alert and be prepared for the unexpected

If you're cycling:

  • obey all traffic laws, signs and signals
  • signal all turns
  • ride 1 metre from the curb
  • ride past parked cars as though every door could open
  • ride in a straight line, on the right side of the road
  • wear a helmet and bright clothing
  • equip your bike with a horn or bell, a white front light, and a red rear light or reflector

Sharing our trails

When using our trails, whether walking, jogging or cycling, pedestrians always have the right of way. Cyclists should use a bell or horn when passing, and everyone should keep right to let others pass.
