Freedom of Information
The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act establishes a right of access to municipal government information, while placing restrictions on the collection and disclosure of personal information. Access to some information may be limited by specific exemptions under the Act.
The Act does not interfere with the City's existing open disclosure practices and cannot be used to access information that is already available to the public through another process.
Making a Request
Requests must be made in writing using the Freedom of Information Request Form and submitted, along with the applicable fee, to the City Clerk's Office. The City Clerk is the City's Freedom of Information and Privacy Coordinator.
Appeals
A requester has the right to appeal a decision made by the City regarding access to records or personal information.
Appeals are filed with the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC), an officer of the Ontario Legislature who is independent of the government and municipal institutions.
Appeals can be made by completing and mailing the IPC's Appeal Form or by filing an appeal online through the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario website.
