The City of St. Thomas is committed to accessibility for all residents and visitors.

Provincial legislation

Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 (ODA)

The ODA aims to improve opportunities for people with disabilities and involve them in identifying, removing and preventing barriers to full participation in life across Ontario.

Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA)

The AODA aims to achieve a fully accessible Ontario. It includes 5 standards: customer service, information and communication, employment, transportation, and the built environment.

Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee (MAAC)

Ontario requires municipalities with 10,000 or more residents to establish an Accessibility Advisory Committee. MAAC advises council on preparing, implementing and evaluating the city's accessibility plan.

Corporate Accessibility Policy

The City must develop, implement and maintain policies for meeting our accessibility requirements under the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation. Our Accessibility Technical Committee, department heads, MAAC and council have reviewed and approved this policy. It's available in multiple formats on request.

Our Accessibility Plan addresses existing barriers for people with disabilities and works to prevent new ones.

Accessibility Standards for Customer Service

Ontario Regulation 429/07 set out the Accessibility Standards for Customer Service, in effect since January 1, 2008. As a designated public service organization, the City has complied with these standards since January 1, 2010. The regulation outlines how we provide accessible customer service to people with different disabilities.

When you request a document, we provide it, or the information in it, in a format that takes your disability into account.
