Fire Prevention, Safety & Education
The St. Thomas Fire Department follows the Office of the Fire Marshal's Three Lines of Defense: public education, fire inspections and code enforcement, and emergency response.
Fire Prevention
Code enforcement: We enforce the Ontario Fire Code, the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, and relevant sections of the Ontario Building Code, to maintain a minimum level of life safety across the city. We complete inspections on a regular, requested or complaint basis.
Fire cause determination: We investigate every fire in St. Thomas to determine its origin and cause.
Public education
We offer public education programs to help residents of all ages stay safe from fire:
- Older and Wiser: a fire safety program designed for seniors
- TAPP-C: an arson prevention program
- fire extinguisher training: hands-on training for residents and businesses
- residential home inspections: a voluntary program to help you identify fire risks in your home
Book a station tour or presentation
We're happy to visit schools, host station tours, and set up safety education booths at community events.
