Building Permits

A building permit is official approval from the City that allows construction or renovation work to begin. Before a permit is issued, City staff review your plans to ensure they comply with the Ontario Building Code, the City's Zoning By-law, and other applicable laws and regulations.

Building permits help ensure that construction meets important health, safety, structural, and fire protection standards. It is the responsibility of the property owner (or their authorized agent) to obtain a building permit before starting work when one is required.

When is a Building Permit Required?

In general, a building permit is required for:

  • The construction of a new building
  • Building additions
  • Renovations or alterations
  • Structures greater than 10 square metres (108 sq. ft.)
  • Plumbing work, fixtures, and associated service systems
  • Other projects regulated under the Ontario Building Code

If you're unsure whether your project requires a permit, contact Planning & Building Services before beginning any work.
