Posted on 11/26/2025
The City of St. Thomas is pleased to announce that Joan Rymal has been selected to fill the current vacancy on St. Thomas City Council for the remainder of the 2022–2026 term following the resignation of Councillor Steve Peters on October 14, 2025.

Rymal is returning to City Council having previously served the community for eight years (2014-2018; 2018-2022), bringing proven experience, municipal knowledge, and a strong commitment to public service. Council expressed confidence in the decision and the continuity this appointment will provide heading into the remaining portion of the term.

As a retired nurse with over three decades experience at Victoria Hospital and Dearness Home in London, Rymal has a keen interest in health, safety, seniors, and long-term care. She has demonstrated leadership in community health initiatives, including spearheading a project to place AEDs in all local schools across both the Catholic and public boards. She has also volunteered on the City’s Municipal Accessibility Committee and Honour & Awards Committee, and is a dedicated advocate for City Animal Services and the new Animal Shelter.

During her tenure, she was known for her expertise in human resources, budget management, and her strong advocacy for growth, downtown prosperity, heritage preservation, and accessibility in the community.

Mayor Preston shared his thoughts on the appointment, saying, “We are pleased to welcome Joan Rymal back to City Council. Her experience and long-standing commitment to our community will be a valuable asset as we continue advancing key initiatives and supporting the needs of our residents. We look forward to working with Joan as she resumes her role in municipal leadership.”

"I grew up in Port Lambton, a small town, and St. Thomas has that same close-knit feel. In communities like this, you step up to help when you’re needed,” Rymal said. “I’m happy to take on this role and serve our community once again, and I look forward to contributing wherever I can make a difference."

The City of St. Thomas remains committed to maintaining strong, effective representation for residents while continuing to make meaningful progress on community priorities.

Rymal will make her declaration of office and oath of allegiance at the City Council meeting on Monday, December 8, 2025.
