After an Emergency

Leaving your home because of an emergency is upsetting, and it is easy to forget important details for helping yourself. Here are some tips that may help in your recovery:

  • Contact family and friends to let them know you are safe.
  • Contact your insurance company immediately.
  • Make plans for food, shelter, and clothing - contact family and friends to see if they can help.
  • Tell your employer or school what your situation is.
  • Cancel appointments.
  • Tell your children's school what happened.

Returning Home
Upon returning to your home after an emergency, check for damaged utilities.

NATURAL GAS

Natural gas is colourless, odourless and non-poisonous, but is flammable and can cause death by fire/explosion, as well as suffocation if enough gas displaces the air in a confined space. A rotten egg smell is added for your safety.

If you suspect, smell or see a natural gas leak:
  • Evacuate the home immediately and stay outside until an official says it's safe to go back in
  • Call 911
  • Call Enbridge Gas at (877) 691-1246 from outside and at a safe distance from the leak
  • Don't turn any electrical switches, appliances or computers on or off
  • DO NOT smoke or use lighters or matches, or start any motors near the leak
  • If leaking natural gas is burning, DO NOT attempt to put the fire out yourself

ELECTRICAL

Check for electrical damage, such as frayed wires, sparks or the smell of hot insulation:
  • Don't operate electrical switches or appliances
  • Turn off the system at the main fuse box/breaker panel

WATER

Check for leaks. Shut off the water at the main valve where the water pipe enters your home.

DO NOT turn on the gas, electricity or water until your utility provider has investigated and confirmed it is safe to do so.
