All About Vianode: The Synthetic Graphite Manufacturer Coming to St. Thomas
Posted on 11/20/2025

What is Vianode?

Vianode is a Norwegian company specializing in the production of sustainable synthetic graphite for electric vehicle (EV) battery anodes. Graphite is a critical component in lithium-ion batteries, with each EV battery containing up to 100 kg of it. Vianode’s proprietary technology enables the production of high-performance synthetic graphite with up to 90 per cent lower CO
emissions compared to traditional manufacturing methods.

This facility will be Vianode’s first in North America, marking a significant step in supporting the region’s rapidly growing EV market and strengthening the critical minerals supply chain.

What is synthetic anode graphite?

Synthetic anode graphite is a highly engineered form of graphite used in lithium-ion batteries, particularly in the anode - the part that stores and releases energy during charging and discharging. Synthetic graphite is made through a controlled industrial process that allows for high purity, consistency and tailored performance characteristics. This makes it ideal for electric vehicle batteries, where efficiency, durability, and safety are critical.

How is it produced?

Vianode’s process uses advanced, low-emission technology to turn petroleum coke into high-performance graphite:

  1. Raw Material Handling – Crush, dry, and remove impurities from petroleum coke.
  2. Milling & Shaping – Grind particles for better battery performance.
  3. Agglomeration (when needed) – Fuse small particles to improve fast-charging capabilities.
  4. Graphitization – Heat to around 3000°C in closed furnaces for controlled, efficient production.
  5. Coating – Apply pitch coating to enhance battery properties.
  6. Finished Product Handling – Quality checks and lab analysis ensure specifications meet customer standards.
