The announcement was made during the February 10, 2026 episode of Mayor’s Update, where Mayor Preston reflected on his decades in politics - from his years as a Member of Parliament for Elgin-Middlesex-London (2004–2015) to his two terms as Mayor of St. Thomas.
Mayor Preston emphasized that this decision comes after thoughtful personal and professional consideration. “All things have to be decided personally and professionally,” he said. “At some point, you have to ask yourself when it’s the right time to take a step back.”
While announcing his retirement from elected office, Mayor Preston made clear that his commitment to the community remains unwavering. “There are still eight months of solid work to do,” he said. “I’ve always said I have the best Council in the world. Together, we’ve accomplished so much - and we’re not done yet.”
During Mayor Preston’s two terms, St. Thomas emerged as a national leader in economic development, securing landmark investments including PowerCo’s electric vehicle battery cell gigafactory and Vianode’s advanced battery materials facility - projects expected to create thousands of jobs and position St. Thomas at the centre of Canada’s emerging electric vehicle supply chain.
At the same time, the City advanced new housing projects, infrastructure improvements, business supports, and enhanced partnerships to address homelessness and strengthen services for vulnerable residents.
Mayor Preston expressed deep gratitude to residents, Council, and City staff for their support throughout his time in public life. Although stepping away from politics, he will remain an active member of the community.
“St. Thomas has incredible momentum,” he added. “I’m proud to have been part of this journey and excited for what comes next.”
