Marriage Licences and Vital Statistics

Births, deaths and marriages in Ontario are registered with the Office of the Registrar General. If you need a certificate, you can apply through ServiceOntario. The Clerk's Department can give you information about these services, and we also issue burial permits and marriage licences.

Marriage Licences

We issue marriage licences by appointment, Monday to Friday, except on holidays. To book an appointment, call 519-631-1680 and press "0" for assistance.

You must be at least 18 years old to marry in Ontario. If you are 16 or 17, you can still marry if you have written consent from both sets of parents, on the proper form.

The fee for a marriage licence is $130. You can pay by cash, Interac or credit card.

Each person applying must bring two original pieces of valid, non expired, government issued ID. Acceptable ID includes:

  • Passport
  • Driver's licence
  • Photo ID card
  • Birth certificate
  • Change of name certificate
  • Canadian citizenship card
  • Native status card
  • Permanent resident card
  • Canadian government refugee travel document

Both applicants need to fill out and sign the Marriage Licence Application.

The licence can only be given to the people who are actually getting married. For more details, see our Marriage Licence Requirements.

Divorce

If either applicant was divorced in Canada, bring the original or a court certified copy of the final Certificate of Divorce to your appointment.

If you were divorced outside of Canada, you'll need authorization from the Office of the Registrar General before we can issue your marriage license. To get authorization, send the following to the Office of the Registrar General:

  1. A completed Marriage Licence Application
  2. A Statement of Sole Responsibility for each divorce, signed by both applicants
  3. An original or court certified copy of the divorce decree or annulment (certified by the proper court officer where the divorce was granted). If it's in a language other than English or French, include a translated copy along with a sworn statement from the translator
  4. A legal opinion from an Ontario lawyer, addressed to both applicants, explaining why the divorce or annulment should be recognized in Ontario. The Office of the Registrar General can fax a sample legal opinion letter to your lawyer, call 807-343-7568 or 1-800-461-2156 toll free in Ontario
