Speak Before Council

Request to Appear as a Deputation

St. Thomas City Council welcomes opportunities to hear from residents, community groups and organizations about matters that are important to our community.

If you would like to speak directly to Council about a municipal matter, you may request to appear as a deputation at a Council meeting.

How to Request a Deputation

To request a deputation, please submit a signed letter of request to the City Clerk's Department explaining the issue or topic you would like to address.

Your request must include:

  • Your name

  • Your address

  • Your telephone number

  • The issue or topic you would like to discuss

  • Your signature

Letters of request require an original signature.

Submission Deadline

Your completed request must be delivered to the City Clerk's Department by 12 p.m. on the Tuesday before the Council meeting at which you would like to appear.

Submitting your request as early as possible is encouraged.

Speaking at the Meeting

Approved deputations are provided a maximum of 10 minutes to address Council. This time includes any questions and answers with Members of Council.

If you are appearing on behalf of a group or organization, a maximum of two people may address Council.

We encourage presenters to keep their comments focused on the matter identified in their deputation request and to make the most important information clear and concise.

Questions?

If you have questions about requesting a deputation, meeting deadlines or what to expect when appearing before Council, the City Clerk's Department is happy to help.

We encourage residents to stay informed, participate in local government and share their perspectives on matters affecting St. Thomas.
