Spring Hockey (Youth)

Spring Hockey is a 3-on-3 league for children and youth.

Registration for the upcoming season has not yet opened. It is expected to open in February 2027.

  1. Games run 40 minutes, with a 5-minute warm-up and 5 minutes at the end for penalty shots
  2. Coaches must give every player equal ice time. Shortening the bench is not allowed
  3. Body checking is not allowed
  4. Slap shots are not allowed
  5. Face-offs only happen at the start of each game, or in certain cases involving coincidental penalties
  6. When play stops because a goalie controls the puck or a goal is scored, a whistle signals attacking players to leave the zone. Players can re-enter and resume play once all attackers have exited. Re-entering early results in a penalty for that team
  7. There is no centre-ice line, so there are no icing calls
  8. Offside plays at the blue line are treated as delayed offside. The referee calls for the offending players to release the puck and exit the zone. Once all offending players have exited together, they can re-enter the offensive zone
  9. No player can score more than 3 goals in a single game
  10. Minor penalties result in a penalty shot at the end of the game
  11. Any bench personnel ejected from a game receives an automatic 1-game suspension, at minimum, and may face further review for possible expulsion from the league. We do not tolerate inappropriate behaviour, conduct or language
  12. The largest scoring margin allowed is 5 goals. If a team leads by 5 and scores again, we do not add that goal to the scoreboard until the opposing team scores to bring the margin back to 4
  13. We do not track stats or standings. This league focuses on player development and fun
  14. An alternate gender change room is available at the arena
  15. Coaches are responsible for children's safety in the dressing room. Children must not be left unattended, and coaches must confirm all players have left the dressing room before leaving themselves
  16. A convener is on site for every game to provide goalie equipment for teams that need it, and to answer questions
  17. Full equipment is mandatory

Spring Hockey: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Beginner is for ages 4 to 7, and is meant for children with minimal hockey experience who can skate independently. Tyke is for ages 6 to 8 who have more hockey experience. If your child is highly skilled for their age, we suggest registering them in the division above their age group.

We send the schedule 2 weeks before the season starts. Games generally run youngest to oldest through the day, therefore beginner games are earliest and older divisions play later. Some divisions may have games on a weekday evening due to scheduling.

Most games are at the Joe Thornton Community Centre on Saturdays, though some age groups may play at Memorial Arena.

We distribute jerseys to coaches before the first game. Jerseys are included in your registration fee, and you keep your jersey at the end of the season. Since jerseys are logoed and ordered in advance, we cannot exchange sizes after the season starts.

No, we order jerseys numbered 0 to 10 for each team and cannot take number requests.

We do our best to accommodate team requests. Add your request in the notes when you register, rather than emailing separately. We also try our best to balance skill levels across teams based on the skills and experience indicated in the registration form.

You need a valid police check completed within the past 2 years. If yours is older, we will reimburse the cost of a new one. We rely on parent and guardian volunteers to run this league.
