St. Thomas delegation meets with PowerCo in Germany to advance mega plant development

Mayor Joe Preston will lead a delegation to Germany on December 13, 2023, to advance the gigaplant development initiated earlier this year in St. Thomas by PowerCo, a subsidiary company of Volkswagen.

Mayor Preston, accompanied by St. Thomas City Manager, Sandra Datars Bere and St. Thomas Economic Development Corporation CEO, Sean Dyke, will meet with the Board of Directors of PowerCo and will tour a new electric vehicle battery plant currently being constructed in Salzgitter, a city of approximately 100,000 people in Lower Saxony.

“We are so pleased with the level of collaboration and partnership with the team at PowerCo, as well as the support of the provincial government, as we work to establish this landmark industrial development that will support the St. Thomas and the broader region. Having the opportunity to see the development currently underway in Salzgitter gives us a better understanding of what our future will look like here in St. Thomas and to fully appreciate the outstanding opportunity for the residents of our community”, said Mayor Preston while sharing his great enthusiasm about this trip abroad.

As part of the trip, which will conclude on December 16th, Mayor Preston will also meet with Frank Klingebeil, the Lord Mayor of Salzgitter, with the desire to establish a new and important relationship between our two cities.

Earlier this week, on December 11, 2023, Mayor Preston met with officials from PowerCo Canada Inc., the new Canadian entity that now has responsibility for the St. Thomas gigaplant development. Mayor Preston spent time with their team visiting the completed Phase 1 of the industrial development site and met with PowerCo Canada staff in their new temporary offices here in St. Thomas.

“We want to extend a warm community welcome to our new PowerCo Canada and look forward to working closely and to them becoming integral members of our growing city”, said Mayor Preston.
